The Art of One-of-a-Kind: Why Handmade Matters

In a world dominated by mass production, standing out and finding our own voice in fashion can feel like a challenge. Now more than ever, people are seeking clothing that tells a story, reflects their individuality, and feels authentic to them. This is where one-of-a-kind and handcrafted garments come in—and whether they’re designed and made from scratch, altered, or upcycled, they can be tailored to fit both your body and your personality!

At LXVIII, we believe that every piece should embody creativity and speak for the person wearing it. Our brand focuses on creating one-of-a-kind designs that defy trends and elevate personal style; but whether you’re a consumer or a creator (or both!), we want to help.

Hi, I’m Em (@_1ofEm), the founder of the LXVIII brand, which was born from my love for creating fun, unique, and one-of-a-kind clothing. I came from a long line of artists, tailors, and shoemakers. I started my own journey creating over 20 years ago as a freshman in high school, upcycling and thrift flipping used and vintage clothing. Now, as an independent pattern cutter/dressmaker and entrepreneur, I’ve created everything from one-of-a-kind streetwear, to custom suits, and wedding dresses. I began teaching these methods locally last year, and I’m amazed at how often I hear people say, “I don’t think I can make my own clothes,” or believe that handmade items mean lower quality and less fashion. I truly believe that anyone can learn these skills with the right guidance and a little patience.

That’s why I’ve made it my mission to make artisanal fashion education and resources accessible to everyone. I understand not everyone can afford bespoke clothing, pricey courses, or in-person classes, which is why I’ve decided to create free online tutorials and sewing patterns throughout this blog, beginning 2025. Everyone deserves quality clothing, and here, you’ll soon find tips, tutorials, and inspiration to help you create well tailored, made-to-measure clothing and accessories you’ll love, whether they’re for you to wear or to sell. I’ll also bring you along on my journey, sharing a behind-the-scenes look as I explore new techniques, experiment with fresh ideas, navigate running a business, and overcome my own entrepreneurial challenges.

I hope you find these resources valuable, and I’d love to invite you to subscribe to my newsletter (sign-up below) and new YouTube channel, 1ofEmYouTube, for in-depth tutorials, courses, and more, coming soon.

Why One-of-a-Kind Fashion Matters

Self-Expression Over Trends

With one-of-a-kind clothing, you’re not following trends; you’re setting them. You don’t have to be restricted by what you find in stores. Each handmade piece represents a personal narrative, an opportunity to showcase your unique personality. No one else will have the exact same garment—because it’s made just for you.

Bespoke Fitting

Store bought clothing is designed to fit the masses, not the individual. Companies simply can’t create garments that perfectly fit and flatter everyone, because even people wearing the same size can have vastly different shapes and proportions. The truth is, we are not meant to conform to clothing, it is meant to conform to us. Whether you’re altering existing garments or creating your own from scratch, the fit is what truly brings the outfit to life!

Sustainability

Fast fashion often contributes to environmental waste and unethical labor practices. In contrast, one-of-a-kind fashion promotes sustainability by focusing on slow, thoughtful production methods. Every design is created with intention, reducing waste and encouraging mindful consumption. Being able to choose your own materials, methods, etc. gives you the ability to not just express yourself visually, but remain true to your own values and ethical standards.

Quality That Lasts

It is a common misconception that handmade garments are more fragile than ready-to-wear; however, mass-produced garments generally sacrifice quality for speed, quantity, and other profit-making efforts. Made-to-measure pieces are crafted with attention to detail, using high-quality materials and artisanal techniques of your choice that ensure longevity, wearability, and a feeling of luxury. Well trained tailors value quality and precision, and this type of garment making will far outlast anything mass produced!

Precision and Attention to Detail

The beauty of handmade garments lies in the details. Beyond selecting your own materials, you have the freedom to personalize each piece in a truly unique way. Whether it’s through intricate topstitching, delicate beading, or hand painted accents, these thoughtful finishing touches can elevate your wardrobe and enhance the one-of-a-kind-quality of your creations.

Supporting Creativity and Artistry

Even if you yourself are not a creator or interested in the making process, when you invest in handcrafted fashion, you’re supporting independent designers and artists who thoughtfully pour their hearts into every stitch. Every uniquely made garment is infused with passion, skill, and creativity, blending art and fashion into something special.

Make Every Day Special

Let’s rid ourselves of the notion that one-of-a-kind pieces and bespoke clothing are for special occasions. —Life is the special occasion, and no matter your personal style, they can be implemented into your everyday wardrobe effortlessly. You deserve it!

the Point

Fashion should be an extension of who you are, not just something you wear. Choosing one-of-a-kind pieces allows you to celebrate your individuality and embrace a more meaningful approach to style. Both the making process and putting in the extra energy we deserve to curate our own collection of wearable art are unique forms of self-care.

At LXVIII and 1ofEm, we’re passionate about creating clothing that empowers you to stand out in your own way, and whether you’re interested in creating to wear, creating to sell, and/or purchasing from other makers, we’re here to help. Stay tuned for unique pieces, behind-the-scenes looks at our creative process, and tutorials on creating quality garments of your very own.
